You might have been sitting around when you asked yourself the question: “so is soccer just as popular in the US as it is in Europe and the rest of the world?”

To answer that, it might help to clarify one major point of confusion. We are the only country in the world that refers to the sport as soccer. The rest of the world calls it football, which really makes logical sense when you think about it. However, football in the US means quite a different thing as well so, to avoid confusion, they changed the name of the sport to soccer.

Honestly, football has always been a decidedly European sport. Just like we Americans have our baseball that is indicative of both our history and our culture, the Europeans have their soccer and they have for some time. However, with the amount of access many Americans have to international football coverage through direct tv internet services and the like, it would seem that soccer or football isn’t just for the British anymore. More and more Americans are awakening to football and there was even an American soccer team in recent history that even gave the European teams a run for their money.

After a great year in 2010 for the game of soccer, 2011 is looking to be just as good for fans and players alike. The 2010 World Cup subjected people all over the world to the greatest soccer players on the planet. Needless to say, there are a ton of big named players in the world and a ton of players that are at the highest level. With that said, there are a few players that stick out to experts and fans that are out of this world.

The consensual number one player in the world has also been called the “Messiah.” Lionel Messi has been watched since he was a young player and he is now the greatest player in the world. After winning multiple trophies in 2010 with Barcelona, many people are expecting him to stay at the top of the world for a long time.

The only player that has even been mentioned in the same sentence is Portuguese international Cristiano Ronaldo. He is one of the most decorated players in the world and has seemed to find his home at Real Madrid. His free kicks are famous for being incredibly deadly and he can strike when least expected.

When mentioning the world’s best a goalie must be mentioned. Iker Casillas is the best goalie in the world and his trophy case can prove it. After winning the Copa Del Rey and a World Cup in the span of one year, he is one of the most impressive goalie of all time.

The best soccer fields really depends on where you live in the world, and which part of the county you live in. The best soccer fields tend to be found outside of the United States. The lack of interest in the sport in the US, tends to lead to lacks of funding, and lack of interest to construct better playing fields.

When looking for a great place to play, turf and the type of grass used in the field are detrimental to making the best playing field for the game. South American and European countries tend to build the greatest fields and put the most money into making a great playing ground. The popularity in the sport in these locations, sparks an interest in designing amazing fields for the players to be able to perform at thier greatest capabilities.

Although the US isn’t the greatest soccer Mecca, if you are looking for a good playing field, turf (artificial grass) is great in the US; especially since the states where soccer is more popular tend to be more humid and dry. The turf will not get destroyed due to weather conditions like grass fields.

Turf, grass choices, and quality of design should be considered when designing the best fields and places to play.

Okay, this is a highly subjective topic. While these moments may be disputed by some, they are all incredible moments throughout World Cup history that keep us in anticipation four years at a time. In no particular order

Most people love an underdog. In 1950, Uruguay unexpectedly made it to the finals to play, host team, Brazil. They pulled off the upset of World Cup history. It was an inspired moment. The 200,000 home fans sat in silence, and the team even refused to wear white uniforms ever again. Brazil would have their moment, in time. In 1970,

Brazil’s Pele made the mystifying pass to Carlos Alberto to secure their fate as World Cup champions.
Another incredible tale of World Cup bewilderment is the unlikely win of West Germany in 1954. The team was done two goals, only to come back and win 3-2 against Hungary. It was another true inspiration. As was the debut, well the first time people actually paid attention, of the Cruyff turn. This infamous turn has been replicated so often, that it has fundamentally changed football.

Of course dozens of other shining moments exist. These are simply a few to leave you inspired for the day.

Finding the right size ball for your team seems to be a little odd. Most sports are played with a regulation size ball. The standard ball in adult soccer games is regulated by FIFA, the Intentional Federation of Football Associations. Many leagues across the world, including the American Youth Soccer Organization follow FIFA’s recommendations on soccer ball size.

Finding the right ball size for you team is a matter of finding the size that other teams will use to play with you. They are not looking for a ball that will give an advantage to one team or the other. They simply want to use one that will work for everyone on the field. A youth league may user smaller sizes in order to accommodate the smaller hands and feet of younger players.

The average coach is not going to go into a shop and spend a lot of time picking different sizes of balls out. There are only so many sizes he can choose from on most sports. He’ll simply pick up the balls in bulk, take them back to his team and start practice. The personal equipment of a player is often what makes a difference in many sports.
